Phil Zakas

Phil Zakas is a DMV local acoustic guitar singer-songwriter with an engaging and energetic acoustic guitar style and strong vocals. He is known for his skillful covers of timeless acoustic rock and folk classics along with his own original compositions. He has performed at various venues around the Howard and Montgomery County MD area. Most recently he has performed at “The Historic 1938 Olney Theater”, the “Music Café” in Damascus, “Brookville Beer Farm”, “Morris Point Restaurant” in Abell, and “Restaurant 198” in Burtonsville, to name just a few. Phil is well known in the local acoustic guitar “open mic” community as a long-time host (from 2015 thru 2021) of the Saturday Afternoon Open Mic held at the (COVID closed) “Music Café” in Damascus.

Artists covered by Phil include: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Sting, John Prine, James Taylor, Led Zeppelin, John Denver and many other great artists.

Phil Zakas started playing guitar at age 17. He began performing at coffee houses and other venues at age 18.

In 2008 he was invited to play lead guitar and vocals for his company (Deloitte) band.

In 2016 Phil started an acoustic guitar duo known as “Shades of Gray” with his good friend Pat Ward. Together they continue to enjoy a long run of performing at local (as well as Florida) venues.

Phil has some “church choir” roots which speak to his passion for blues and gospel, while his band experience helps to hone his performance, vocal, and guitar skills.

Phil is currently performing at various locations in the area, including weekly at “La Palapa Too” in Laurel.
